What To Do After A Car Accident
The impact of an automobile accident can rattle even the most stable individual. Even if there are no injuries, just the sound of the crushing metal can cause a normally sound mind to run off in a panic. You need to have a plan in place to keep you focused if you are ever involved in an automobile accident.
1. Don't admit fault. Your mother may have taught you to say "I'm sorry," but it may not be the best statement at the scene of an accident. It is fine to be concerned about any others involved in the accident, but sorry admits fault for the accident. This could come back to haunt you if the accident ever ended up in a trial situation.
2. Get a record. Take down the names and contact information of any witnesses. Although the police will do the same and the police are supposed to give you an account of all the witnesses, it is easier if you do it for yourself. You will also want to take pictures of the accident and the surrounding area.
3. Make the call. Call your automobile insurance agent to let him know about the accident. This call should only be made AFTER emergency contacts have been called.
4. Be straight. Tell the police the truth of the accident – without saying “it was my fault.” Let the trained professionals decide who is at fault for the accident.
The most important thing to remember if you are in an accident is not to panic. Take a few deep breaths, take your time and follow the plan that you have set up before the accident occurred.
